The Details of Life

The text from my son came through last fall as I was in the middle of buying airline tickets for family weekend at his new college and answering the door for the furnace man to do the annual service check. Uh oh, what’s happened?

It turned out he had left his backpack with his laptop in it outside two nights before, gone back to his room, fallen asleep, and remembered it the next day. After searching for it throughout that day, reporting it to campus safety, lost and found, and maintenance, he was starting to think maybe it was gone. He was more worried about his class notes than the computer.

I encouraged him to “PRAY” — even if it seemed lost and hopeless, especially if it seemed lost and hopeless!

A couple of hours later, while I was having lunch with a group of my friends who had also prayed, I saw some texts coming through with “!!!!!” It turns out, when he went to lunch at the cafeteria, he was leaving and saw two custodians. He thought he would ask them if they knew what might happen to a lost backpack. The very man he asked was the very man who had found it and picked it up and given it to his boss. He knew exactly where it was. A short time later, the backpack with laptop had been returned — before his major afternoon class where he needed those notes.

Yes, it likely eventually would have made its way back around from this other man’s office to lost and found, but that could have been days or even weeks, during which time, the stress and desperation would have been growing. This was instantly resolved. We had prayed and asked God. God then led my son to the one man on the entire campus who had the answer. Praise the Lord!

The story illustrates what God has shown me again and again: He is involved in all life’s details. He answers when we call upon Him. Though the answer may not always be as quickly resolved as the backpack, or even in the way we hope, we can be assured of His love and care for us, even as we wait. God is worthy of our trust. I praise Him that we can take everything to Him in prayer and that we can trust Him in all things.

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart;
    I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.
I will be glad and exult in you;
    I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.
